The new site is taking the place of this blog and the old site (northwoodcc.org/nsl) for all the latest and greatest at Northwood Student Life.

The Not-So Video Update

Well we lied. Yesterday we said we’d be bringing you the latest episode of the Video Update today. Due to some technical problems we’re going to for-go the old school method of bullet points. Here we go:

Don’t Panic!

We need to stop the panic. I know some of you are terrified and worried about the impending Armageddon, certain the the world is finally drawing to a close and all hope is lost. What other reason could there be for the Song of the Week and Video Update not arriving and their normal days? Surely, this is the end.

But have no fear, they are not gone but simply delayed. With the Memorial Day weekend everything has been pushed back one day. So this Tuesday you will have a new Song of the Week and Wednesday (tomorrow) you will have a new episode of the Video Update.

Next week we’ll be back to our regularly scheduled programming. You may now go about your lives.

There are times when it feels like God is far away. That is a hard thing to deal with, because God promises to never leave us. So why, in the midst of difficult things, do we so often think he’s gone away?
Faith is described in the Bible as “…being sure of things unseen.” It’s choosing to trust that God is being honest when he says he won’t leave our side. We can’t always feel our heart beating in our chest, but we trust it is still there. We can’t always feel our brain processing thoughts, but we are still sure it’s there. Just because we can’t feel God sometimes, doesn’t mean he has left us.

9th Grade Night Out

As we come to the end of the school year we prepare for the transition of our 9th grade students into the NSL Senior High. But let’s not forget the fact that many great things happened during their time with NSL:jh!

To us, that’s reason to celebrate. So we are pleased to cordially invite all our current 9th grade students to the first annual 9th Grade Night Out!

We will grab some dinner in Minneapolis before heading to Uptown for some improv comedy at Comedy Sportz! It’s going to be a night full of fun, laughter, and celebration of your time in the NSL Junior High

Hot on the heels of last weeks song about letting go, we’re serving up a new one by Tenth Avenue North. When we follow God, there is a lot of stuff we have to let go. We hang on to all kinds of false securities (good grades, sports and activities, money and possessions, certain social groups, etc.) that can (and do) get in the way of finding out who God really wants us to be. We’re control freaks. Most people have a really hard time when they aren’t in control of what’s happening, they start to worry. Turns out, that’s not how we’re supposed to live. The Bible couldn’t be any clearer, it says “Do Not Worry about anything, instead pray about everything…” God says not to worry, period. That’s right, worrying = disobeying God. Ouch!

The song of the week this week comes from Francesca Battistelli, a young up-and-comer in the Christian music biz. The track “I’m Letting Go talks about the feeling when we just need to quit worrying and jump into what God has for us! Enjoy.

Rage Against The Media – by Kaycee Clark

Over the last weekend I went to a conference called Spring Blitz with the youth group. At this conference a man named Craig Sanborn was speaking on the subject of the media. He talked about how the media has more effect on us than we think. He said that right now it's thought to be ok to swear and put sexual things in music and magazines or on tv. Notice the key word in that sentence. It's THOUGHT to be ok. It's not ok. In fact, it's far from it.

Philippians 4:8 says 'Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.'

This verse pretty much says ' Are the things you listen to, watch, and read pleasing to God?'
I felt like a hypocrite. I was shocked at all the stuff in the media but when I took a look at the things I watch, read, and listen to, I noticed that I had been dragged in by it all. I COULD have said to myself "The stuff I listen to isn't as bad as all that other stuff" but it's all the same. Swearing is swearing. Sexuality is sexuality. I felt I had to stop listening, watching and reading these things that are evil in the sight of God.

I got rid of half of all my music and posters. I got rid of anything with swearing or bad messages. I paid for those things and it made it hard to let it go, but I knew it was something I had to do. It was something that would help me take care of my soul, which is something that is way better than all the music, tv shows and books in the whole world. As a teen, the media bombards me everyday and it's a lot of negative things. I want to be filled with positive thoughts and actions and I feel this way with a passion.

It's only been a few days but I can feel the change it's made in my life. I think better thoughts about things and other people and I feel closer to God. It's my hope that this message will touch you like it's touched me and that you will fight with me to get closer to God. It is important to me and I hope to make it important to others. This past weekend we were at Blitz and a bunch of the live updates had to do with the awesome music being pumped out by Remedy Drive.

One of the songs they played is called “All Along” and did a pretty good job of capturing the experience for many of us at Blitz. Lots of us shared about how we had been putting a lot of things before God in our life, and it wasn’t working out. This weekend we realized realized that the way we wanted to feel is what God had been offering all along, we had just been looking for it in the wrong place.

So listen to the song, and be reminded that all the things we feel like we have to deal with before we can get to God are the things that he wants to struggle through with us.

Spring Blitz Recap 1 – Friday Night

If you’ve been keeping up with the LIVE Spring Blitz Updates, you’d know that we arrived safely in Duluth this evening. The drive up was a blast, our 4 vehicle caravan meant tons of fun during the drive. There was a thunderstorm, watching of movies, card games, and an all out, loud as can be sing-a-long of “A whole new world” from Aladdin. Nice.

We arrived in Duluth in time to kick things off Spring Blitz style. We are in the arena of the DECC, the same place the UMD Bulldogs play hockey. It’s really cool to see so many other Christian teens all together. The band Remedy Drive led us in worship, those guys are crazy! They were jumping off of everything, it was a blast.

Our seats are the best we’ve ever had at Blitz. We’re usually up in the nosebleeds, but this year we are in the 5th and 6th row. It’s way more fun to be able to see everything right there, even though the 3 giant screens are helpful.

Sean McDowell is the speaker this weekend. He’s a fun guy. We’re going to be talking about Loving God with all your heart. Mark 12:30 is the theme verse. He talked about 5 truths of the heart:

The heart reflects who we really are
God judges the heart (not the actions/words/etc.)
The heart is wicked/deceitful
The heart follow the will
The heart longs for God

We followed it up with some good questions about the things we’re passionate about in life and what we commit our time to. Luke asked where we were on a scale of 1 to 10 how passionate we were about God. It was interesting because some people said 2 and 3 and some people said 8 and 9, and

everything in between. It’s nice to know we’re at different places and not alone.

Tomorrow morning is almost here already (man, we should sleep!) and we’re excited to start talking about the soul. Thanks for your prayers, we’re having a great time!

Yesterday we celebrated the greatest of all holidays! The day Jesus came back from death. It’s hard to capture all of the amazing significance of that action, and harder still to find a way to adequately say thank you. It feels like no matter what words we use… they aren’t worth enough.

But God wants our thanks, even if it feels inadequate, like it doesn’t come close to capturing how we truly feel. He wants it anyway, for what it’s worth.

The band Dogwood took a departure from their usual punk sound to record this acoustic attempt at saying thank you for the very thing we celebrated this past weekend.

“Small Witness” by Kirsten Stillman

Not a sound echoes through the small cave. The air is stale after three days of being shut up. The darkness settles over the lone figure lying so still and lifeless inside its yawning quietness.

Outside dawn peeks over the horizon, wanting to spill forth its glorious light. Inside the tomb, the air stirs as a single sound echoes through the silence.

Huuuuh-haaaaaa

A single breath, yet it echoes through the small space.

Thump-thump, thump-thump

A heart stutters back to life. Its steady beat sending small, excited tremors through the rock that houses the tomb. The very earth itself seems to hold its breath as eyelids slowly lift upwards, uncovering warm, love-filled eyes. Eyes that have seen much, yet still look over the small and weak with love and acceptance.

I hold my breath, too. But for a different reason, I know what this means, even if the humans do not.

The man rises, the strips of linen falling off him as if they had never touched him. The earth shakes with its celebration dance, sending birds flying and whirling through the air in bright celebration, twisting and floating in an intricate dance of hardly contained glee. The grass absolutely shivers with excitement, quivering in delighted play. The very dirt seems to sing out to the heavens with celebration, sending waves of happiness into all who touch its vast surface.

The rock of the cave trembles with joy, the rock blocking the entrance rolling away smoothly, letting in the bright welcome the sun is shining down upon the man. The man steps out into the glorious light; the sun beats down joyfully, reverently, reveling in the man’s return to life.

The man leaves the cave, and the next moment he is gone.

An angel appears, placing himself on the great stone that used to cover the entrance to the tomb. I skitter out of the cave to hide in the grass, not knowing what to do now.

Joy swells in my tiny heart, making me want to leap up and dance as the earth did. The feeling warms my heart as I open my wings and give in to the urge to dance and play in the bright sunshine. He is alive! The world has a new freedom.

I dance for them, the humans. I dance for Him, the man. I dance, because it is what I was made for.

The joy in my small little body seems to be radiating off me, infecting the world around me. The grass sways and dances on the breeze, the trees rustle and sing out joyful notes in the rustle of their leaves. The animals burst into song, jumping and dancing through the trees, grass, and dirt. The wind plays across the surface of the earth, sweeping the good news in all directions, spreading the joy and happiness. The plants gossip and shriek in glee as they do their part to spread the good news.

The world has regained its hope. The miracle that has just occurred has changed everything. If nothing else happens to this small creature of God, I will be content in knowing that the miracle of life for this world has been completed. This is only the beginning.

I wince every time the hammer hits the nail.

Clang.

It’s not like I’ve never heard the sound of metal hitting metal as the hammer drives a nail into wood. I’ve lived most of my life with a carpenter for a husband. It’s a common sound, one I’m used to.

Clang.

And it’s not like I hadn’t known something would happen. My son had been telling all who would listen that this day would come.

Clang.

I just hadn’t expected it to be like this.

I lift my tear-streaked face towards the heavens. Why? Oh, WHY!? I shout silently at the heavens. Why would you put this on one man? He is Blameless!!

There are other women here beside me, all around me, weeping as I am. We weep loudly, grieving. They suffer with only their hearts. The only pain that courses through them with each resonating sound of metal on metal, they only weep with what their hearts and heads tell them is grief. I know not how much each one’s heart suffers. The only thing that matters is the sincerity of their tears.

Clang.

I suffer with my whole heart and more, my whole being cries out in pain as the nail is driven deeper into the wood. I feel as if that very nail is being driven straight through my heart, leaving its mark not only on that one small part of me, but on my whole body. Breaking me. Shattering me.

Clang.

I cannot take it much longer, this pain that makes my whole body tremble. The women are holding me back, I know they feel my trembling. I do not care.

I know that they are trying to protect me from the very men who are so heartlessly breaking everything in me.

Clang.

I crumple to the ground, unable to bear the blinding pain and all-consuming grief. My sobs shake my body. It is time.

Last week some of the junior high students talked about the ways Satan tries to get to us with lies about how we aren’t good enough. How nobody cares about us. How our prayers will never be answered.

I was reading Psalm 22 and I realized how much it captured that feeling. The The feeling that God is far away, that everyone is teasing you, that He isn’t listening. He knows how we feel!

I’m always amazed by the emotional 180 David pulls in a lot of the Psalms. He goes from “You aren’t listening” to “I will praise you” in no time flat. I want that. I want to be able to praise God even when things aren’t going the way I want them to. I think that’s what I’m going to pray for this week.

Hey all, two things to clear up really quickly.

1) Due to technical difficulties we didn’t get the Video Update up today. But have no fear, we’ll have this week’s episode up for you tomorrow.

2) Youth Group Will Meet As Usual this Wednesday Night, April 8. Apparently there is a rumor going around that there is no youth group, which is weird because we never ever said that. And you’re not calling us a liar… are you?

So Junior High students should plan to be there… and since it’s Spring Break for many of you and your friends are sitting at home and bored… you should bring them too!

Last week we posted an article about the song Storms by Lifehouse. The response to the article was greater than expected, and it got us thinking about doing a similar thing each week. Music has an amazing ability to move us and speak to us in ways nothing else can. It was one of the things in life that make me certain God exists.

So starting tomorow (Monday morning) we will be posting a new song and lyrics each week. The musical style might not always be your cup of tea… but we encourage you to check out the lyrics anyway and see what God has to say through each song. Enjoy the music!

No Youth Group on Easter

We are only a few weeks away from the most fantastic holiday of them all, Easter!

And though we all enjoy chocolate bunnies and delicious meals, there is a depth to what we celebrate that is hard to capture in words. Jesus beat death! That’s sweet!

On Easter there will be 3 services at Northwood, 9am, 10am, and 11am. Because of the different schedule and various family activities that take place on Easter, we will not have youth group that morning or The Table that night. Have a great Easter!

New NSL Structure

It’s no secret that the economy has been unhealthy lately, and that the ripple effect is felt far and wide. Northwood Church is no different, the significant drop in giving has meant greater difficulty in funding the programs and ministries that make Northwood great. While we have made deep cuts to try and balance the budget, we just finished the first quarter of 2009 and we’re still not there.

For this reason we are introducing a new tiered structure to NSL. Starting next month there will be a new tiered pricing plan for Northwood Student Life events and programs. This is similar to most other extra-curricular that teenagers participate in. We feel this will not only help in the continued funding of NSL programs, but will also increase participation. Students are more likely to attend when they have a financial stake in doing so.

Beginning May 1st, students can choose between Annual, Monthly, and Pay-As-You-Go plans. Here is how they break down.

Monthly Plans
These plans can be changed at the beginning of each month. Calculating is simple, just total the Cost Per Month for each of the programs a student will participate in. For instance, a student that plans to attend Sunday Mornings and Midweeks, but no events, would pay a monthly fee of $25. For the diehard participant, the All-Inclusive rate saves them $20 a month.

Storms

Apparently it is storm week at NSL. On Wednesday at the Gathering we talked about the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the water. This morning we talked about Jesus calming the storm. And in the past week there has been rain, ice, snow, hail, thunderstorms, fires, tornadoes, and massive flooding… all in Minnesota. It’s stormy out there.

We’ve all experienced storms. They are captivatingly dangerous, thrill is mixed with intimidation as dark menacing clouds crawl over the horizon and slowly consume the sky. They are capable of great destruction, and still many of us are mesmerized by their glorious beauty. They are one of the best metaphors for God the world has to offer.

There is a song by the band Lifehouse that talks about the storms life can bring, and the confusion that sets in as we wonder where God has gone in the midst of our turbulent seas. The feeling that God has left us is normal, even though it is never true.

If you’ve ever been tossed by a giant, you’ve experienced the loss of direction that comes as the wave turns you over. It can be terrifying. Suddenly you don’t know which way it is back to the surface. In that situation it would be silly to think, “Oh, the surface must have left me… I’ll just wait here under water until it comes back to me.” But this is what we do with God. We say, “Oh, my life has become incredibly difficult, God must be somewhere else, I guess I’m on my own.”

God isn’t in the business of making our lives “difficulty-free.” He is in the business of freeing us from being afraid of difficulties. In all of life, but especially in the storms, our first concern should be getting as close to Him as possible, ‘cause he’s probably already closer than you think.

Here is a perfect video for this week, being the start of Lent and all. It’s a collection of illustrations that an artists drew to account for Jesus’ 40 days of fasting in the wilderness, and subsequent temptation by Satan. Here’s the story out of Matthew 4:

The Temptation of Jesus

¹ Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. ² For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry. ³ During that time the devil^[a] came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Lent Challenge

Hey everyone,

Just a reminder that we are starting the Lent challenge this Wednesday. What is the “Lent Challenge” you ask? Well, allow us to explain:

Lent is an early-Christian tradition where followers of Christ voluntarily abstain and/or fast from particular foods/practices during the forty day period leading up to Easter. While this is not required as a Christian, it can be a beneficial practice in self-control and sacrifice to God. Thus the challenge is to think of something (or somethings) that you can give up for the forty days leading up to Easter!

That’s the basic gist. So the question is, what are you giving up for the Lent Challenge? Let us know in the comments what it is so we can cheer you on and keep you accountable!

Friends and family are invited to join along too. Maybe you give something up as a family! We’ll check in for updates as the challenge goes on. Good luck and God Bless!

The company that ran the NSL Jukebox for us has gone under, so the Jukebox isn’t online anymore. I’m hoping to find an alternative way to provide great Christian music for your listening enjoyment, I’ll keep you posted.

Congratulations! You’re Filthy Stinking Rich!

I was introduced to a new website yesterday called the “Global Rich List.” It’s a site that has you put in your annual income and it tells you how wealthy you are compared to the rest of the world.

So I plugged in the median income of Maple Grove ($90,000/year), hit ‘Show Me The Money’, and voila! Richest 0.72% of the world. There are something like 6.7 billion people in the world who earn less than that a year.

“But wait!” you say, “I don’t make that much!” You’re still filthy stinking rich. If you live around the U.S. poverty line you’re living of around $14,000/year. That still puts you in the top 12.5% of the world. So by the time you’re “poor” in the United States, there are still around 6 billion people poorer than you in the world.

But the real kick in the teeth for me was when I figured out where I would be in my old high school job. I made a unexciting $125/month. That still put me in the top 1/4 of the world, there are still 5.8 billion people who live off less than I made in high school (and I didn’t have to pay for food or clothes or anything).

So what should we do? I think we simply need to hold our money more loosely. The love of money is a sin, and one that Jesus is pretty serious about staying away from. We’re in the middle of a recession, with headlines every day talking about what a catastrophe it is. While it isn’t pleasant to hear of friends and family losing their jobs or taking cuts in pay, I am always in favor of some perspective. And the perspective here is that we are filthy, stinking, rich.

The Cost

Yesterday morning, Kathy Collier told us about her trip to Africa and work with refugees there. She shared great stories and showed us tremendous pictures of smiling children, the slums, African animals, and the many people she met while she was there. The thing that struck me was the tremendous cost that came with being a Christian in the slums of an African country.

Here we set our Facebook status to “Going to church” and drive up to the front door. There they walk a mile to a bus so nobody knows where they went.

Here we can by shirts that say “Jesus is my best friend” at Wal-Mart. There their lives are in danger because of medal with with a Bible verse written on it.

Here we have to pay some money to go on a retreat. There the knowledge that they went on the retreat would be cause for them to be put to death.

Here, some people just get a little uncomfortable when they find out I’m a pastor. There, the Pastors in the slums are so unwelcomed by the slumlords that they have a standing death threat against them.They could be murdered at any time because of what they do.

I don’t feel like it’s every really cost me that much to follow Jesus. Here, being a Christ-follower has meant living in my car for a time, paying more for college than I had hoped, or earning less than my peers by taking ministry jobs.

That seems pretty lame when you consider the cost for following Jesus there is tallied up by the man attacked with machetes (scars across his face) or the man who is without a leg, or the girl who gets beat each day… all because they follow Christ.

I am blessed. I am selfishly thankful that I don’t have to endure the same hardships I heard about yesterday. But I don’t think I understand the value of my relationship with God, because the cost is not as steep for me.

I don’t know the secret to a passionate faith like the one you must have to risk your life for Jesus’ name… but I do know that Sunday morning I felt like a very lazy Christian, and that I need to change.

I was working to get The Video Update episode out on time today, but after a series of events that I’d rather not talk about at the moment, it is 1 in the morning and I’m not much closer to having it done. So I will awake tomorrow, have some strong coffee, and try and get it published before school is out. In the meanwhile there are a few things to let you know about.

Tonight is the first night with the new start time for The Gathering. We begin at 7pm and finish at the same time of 8:30pm.

Our very own Kathy (Sr. High Leader) is heading to Kenya on Sunday for a 2 week mission trip. She, along with 5 other Northwooders, are going to be doing all sorts of great stuff to learn about the culture near Nairobi and do all they can to be servants to them in the name of Jesus Christ.

It’s a really exciting opportunity, and a first for Northwood Church, please be praying for Kathy and the team while they are gone.

Letter 2 Yourself

Each year at the New Year’s Party everyone is invited to write a letter to themselves. Those letters are then sealed up, and they get mailed back to you a year later, many of you should have gotten those letters last week.

We did the same thing this year, but I want to give everybody a chance to participate, it’s a pretty sweet experience to see what you were going through a year ago and what has happened since. There are a few ways you can participate.

1) Download the page to write your letter, write it, and bring it with on Sunday in an envelope with your address.

2) Get a copy of the page and an envelope on Sunday and bring it back to The Table or The Gathering.

3) Fill out this form and submit it, your letter will then be printed and put in an envelope to be sent back to you at the end of the year.

This can be a very insightful experience, but it all depends on what you write, the more you explain your feelings about things now, the more you’ll be able to see the change in the coming year. Enjoy!

2008: A Look Back

The last year has some wonderful experiences and a lot of great memories. From big trips we took to fun memories we shared at our normal meetings, there was a lot to remember Here are just a few I could remember (click the links to visit earlier posts):

Splash Camps – A great time with lots of memories, tons of new friends, and even a brand spankin’ new Christian!
SonShine – loud music, big storms, and a kiddie pool, oh yeah!
Minneapolis Mission Trip – Lots of painting and lots of amazing stories from people
Photo Scavenger Hunt – Excuse me officer, can we take your picture?
MEA Retreats – trips for the Junior High and Senior High with all kinds of random adventures and some pretty intensely powerful time as a community.
Halloween Bonfire – Big fire = big fun!

Plus, there were a lot of really great times had a The Gathering, The Table, and on Sunday mornings. Simply put, it was an amazing year, and I’m looking forward to next year as we’ve got some great stuff planned, but more on that in the coming weeks.

The Senior High Christmas party will happen tonight as scheduled. The weather was threatening to cancel, but the storm seems to be tracking mostly north of us, so we’re on!

It’s a little slippery out there, but we’re Minnesotans, we can handle it! So drive safe, and take the corners a little slower than usual, but we’ll see you at 6pm!

Christmas Sweater Scoring System

The NSL White Elephant Potluck Ugly Christmas Sweater Parties are coming up next week. Aside from awesome food and crazy gifts, it’s all about the gnarly sweaters that we’ll be sportin’.

For those still struggling, I found a scorecard for the Christawesomeness of your sweater over at the perpetually hilarious Stuff Christians Like blog. So here it is:

Official Point System of Sweater Christmaweseomeness:
1. If your sweater has a nativity scene = +1 point
2. If your sweater has lights on it = +1 point
3. If your light is for Rudolph’s nose = -1 point
4. If your light is for the star of Bethlehem over your nativity scene = +4 points
5. If your sweater has actual bells and whistles from the Polar Express tied on by pieces of yarn = +2 points
6. If you can hear the bells = -2 points
7. If every time one of the bells rings, you get excited because an angel just got its wings = + 1 point
8. If your sweater has Luke 2 written out on it (the entire chapter) = +3 points
9. If it is KJV = +2 points
10. If it is actually a puff paint sweatshirt, which is really just a Christmas sweater wannabe = -3 points

It's like putting an ice pick in your mouth and poking it around. I'm sorry, but if I want the flavors of mint and blood to mix in my mouth, I'll go to the dentist. This injustice needs to stop now, so we're starting a boycott of candy canes effective immediately. I think it’s the Southern Baptist roots in me that really wanted to start a boycott. That’s why I started Humans Against Candy Knives, or H.A.C.K. Join the fight on the Facebook group I started.
19. If it has any other kind of cane on it= +2 points. This could be one of the wise men’s canes, sugar canes, or even hurricanes. Just as long as they’re not candy canes.

Sunday Series | Just Do It

We spend a lot of time doing a lot of things. Each week we spend hours and hours online, watching TV, getting ready in the morning, eating meals… we even spend over an hour each week deciding what to do!

But one thing that we never seem to have time for is “God Time.” The bummer is, there are some pretty sweet side effects to regular time spent hanging out with the Big Guy. Sweet perks like:

Peace
Joy
Truth
Help to Overcome Sin
Direction in Life

That’s not a shabby list. Over the next couple weeks we’ll be looking at the importance of regular God Time, and working to make it a priority in our lives.
(Hey, just in time for New Year’s Resolutions, sweet!)

True Hope and Change? Yes We Can.

This week our country elected it’s next President. A look at the popular vote reminds us that the country is basically split in half politically. (53% Obama vs. 47% McCain). There is a divide that widens whenever we elect a new leader, and a resentment that arises on the losing side.

This stems from too many people relying too heavily on the influence and actions of our nation’s leader.

The words “hope” and “change” practically grew on trees this year, as candidates in dozens of races evoked them as the new standard for political progress. Entire campaigns were based on the idea of restoring hope and bringing change.

The obvious insight is that we are a country that desperately needs hope, and deeply desires the change it would take to have that hope restored. The problem is many spent Tuesday waiting around to see if the result of the election would bring them the hope they want.

“We were given this hope when we were saved. (If we already have something, we don’t need to hope for it.)” That’s Romans 8:24. There is nothing that a new president will bring to our world that can overshadow the things that a relationship with Jesus already provides. While every president faces a time when citizens are disappointed by his decisions, “… this hope will not lead to dissapointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” [Romans 5:5]

And that love, not a political party, will be what brings the change we hope for in our world. Every political issue has already been addressed by Jesus.

The Economy
And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. [2 Corinthians 9:8]

That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing?
[Matthew 6:25]

Caring for the poor
You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully. [2 Corinthians 9:7]

National Security
We have been rescued from our enemies
so we can serve God without fear, [Luke 1:74]

You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! [Matthew 5:43-44]

Crime and Punishment
So you see, the Lord knows how to rescue godly people from their trials, even while keeping the wicked under punishment until the day of final judgment. [2 Peter 2:9]

And it could go on.

The point is this, despite who you rooted for or what you think needs to happen in Washington, the purest and most reasonable shot we have at providing hope and bringing positive change does not come from filling in a circle on a ballot, but from living the way Jesus asks his followers to live.

Failing at that makes us a useless lamp [Matthew 5:15]. Sending politicians instead of light into the dark parts of this world. It makes us meaningless.

Attempting it makes us the salt of the earth that Jesus spoke of [Matthew 5:13]. Battling the decaying world and becoming the spice that brings flavor to life. It creates a force for good that will overshadow any legislation ever passed, speech ever given, or political movement ever organized.

Don’t wait for an elected official to bring change. Don’t use elections as your only source of hope. Don’t blame politicians for our lack of effort.

New Series: Share Your Story

The greatest thing that you have to give is your story… share it!

Our story shapes who we are, how we think, what we do, and what we’ll become. It is the center of everything we experience in life. And it is the best thing you can share with someone.

FaithStories are an important part of our culture at Northwood, they encourage, explain, and excite our idea of having a relationship with God. Our new Sunday Series starts up this week. “Share Your Story…” is a group experiment in storytelling. Ever single student in NSL will have a chance to share their stories, because everybody’s story has something to offer.

Prayer PWNS Temptation

Yesterday we went through a list of Bible verses about prayer as we wrapped out “Connect” series on communication with God. Matthew 26:41 says:

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

That’s a pretty cool idea, but during our conversation one of the students put it in their own words:

Prayer PWNS Temptation

Yes it does. I think with meal times, youth group meetings, and other routine forms of prayer we sometimes forget that prayer is a very powerful thing. It isn’t just “Thanks for this food.” But it can be a way to fight the “little Devil on your shoulder encouraging 100 poor choices a day.”

Forgetting the power that prayer actually has is probably one of the most common ways that Christ followers get beat. We forget that when hard stuff comes our way we can go straight to prayer, and we can trust that prayer will make a difference in what’s happening.

Halloween Night Bonfire! [Free Awesomeness Included]

Burn, baby, Burn! Halloween Night we’re going to have a huge Bonfire at the Bergren’s place in Otsego.
(We’ll get a map out soon).

There will be food, night games, candy, and a big ol’ bonfire! And of course, it’s FREE!

We're doing a bonfire instead of a hayride this year for a few reasons, but the one I'm most excited about is that it's a great event to invite friends to.

We're gonna have some food to cook, some night games to play, and a HUGETASTIC fire. At one point we're going to take just a couple moments to share about the HOPE and LIFE that a relationship with Jesus can bring. (The whole point we do anything!)

It's a simple way to follow through on the whole reason that Jesus was around, that people can "believe in the one [God] has sent." (John 6:29)

So send out invites, call your friends, and when someone asks what you’re doing for Halloween tell them “I’m going to a HUGE bonfire, you should come!”

We’re going to try and keep track of who’s coming, just so we know how much food and stuff to bring. So please e-mail studentlife@northwoodcc.org if you’re coming and each time a friend says yes!

30HF is a 2 day event where we not only help others, but we also experience some of the hardship that millions of people experience by not eating.

On Friday, November 7, we stop eating at Noon. That night we head to South Minneapolis and Urban Ventures, where we'll spend time serving the Philips Neighborhood through different ways. Then we gather together with our families on Saturday night to break our fast, share a meal, and talk about our experiences.

An experience like none other and a chance to make a difference in other’s lives. 30 Hour Famine has it all. It’s also a great event to bring a friend (plus it’s cheaper!)

This alternative rock band has been around for quite a while on Tooth & Nail Records, but they are getting ready for their first release on a major label, and it’s about time.

The skillful use of unique sounds and the emotional outpouring through instrument and voice are the cornerstone of Anberlin’s unique sound. They’ve spent their time touring around with the Warped Tour where new fans are made at each stop. This is great background music for a drive or when you’re just hanging out, so go and check them out.
